Stainless Steel 309H flanges contain mainly 22–24% chromium and 12–15% nickel, with excess carbon (0.04–0.10%) over the normal 309 for better high-temperature strength. This alloy has outstanding resistance to corrosion, oxidation, and scaling in elevated-heat environments. It has a tensile strength of approximately 585 MPa and a yield strength of about 220 MPa, with good elongation and toughness. The high carbon content provides improved creep resistance and structural integrity over 1000°F (538°C). 309H is suitable for thermal cycling as well as for continuous high-temperature service.

Stainless Steel 309H flanges find extensive applications in those industries where oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength are of prime importance.
