Stainless Steel 904L flanges contain around 19–23% chromium, 23–28% nickel, 4–5% molybdenum, and minor additions of copper (1–2%) for stronger resistance to concentrated acids. The carbon content is kept low (max 0.02%) to prevent welding sensitization. Mechanically, these flanges possess a tensile strength of around 490 MPa and yield strength of around 220 MPa. They possess outstanding toughness, even in the cryogenic environment, and enhanced corrosion resistance in severe, chloride-bearing, and acidic conditions. The presence of high nickel and molybdenum makes 904L extremely efficient in resisting pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.
